After 19 years, I finally did it

For the first time in my life, I just beat Super Mario Bros. I had gotten to level 8-4 many times, but was never able to get past bowser at the end. The fire and the hammers were just too much.

Also, I was never good at doing that thing with the turtle shell in level 3 for extra lives. This is all another reason I love owning a Nintendo Wii. I purchased the game and downloaded it onto the Wii. You can use the Wii remote like a regular Nintendo controller. What's even better is that if you've been playing a game and have to stop, it lets you continue. A couple of nights ago, Carolina and I played until we got to the last level, and we just couldn't beat it.

About 30 minutes ago, I turned my Wii on to read the news and check the weather (2 other very handy features that help me avoid needing to watch the regular news on TV), and I noticed that our progress was saved I still had "(Crown Shape)9" lives left on 8-4. So I went for it.

After about 15 tries, I finally beat it. Eat lava, Bowser. My childhood goal is officially accomplished.

  1. It took a long night with a guide/cheat book and one of my sister's boyfriends before we finally beat Super Mario Bros on SNES! :-) Congrats! There's something nice about finally beating a video game.

  2. Run under him when he jumps...that's how I'd beat him with I played. It's scary that I still remember this.

    CONGRATS!

  3. Running under him at the right time is exactly how I did it. But up until this point, I could almost never make it past that last hammer-throwing guy. I discovered that if I wait for about 20 seconds on the far side of the last gray pipe, eventually the guy comes after you. While he approaches, he stops throwing hammers and it gives you a break to get to Bowser. With Bowser, it's all just timing. It is indeed fun.

  4. I could only do it with hitting that shell just right on level 3. It is not every day that a childhood dream is accomplished.

  5. Craig and I used to play super mario brothers constantly freshman year. His goal was to beat the game as fast as possible with only one guy and you couldn't warp. It was impressive. My favorite challenge is to beat it with only one life and never get a mushroom. I've done it a few times, but it's hard because you have to avoid everything...especially those hammer guys in 8-3. Anyway, those well spent college years. :)

  6. That's incredible! That's like beating Contra without "the code". up up, down down, left right, left right, b, a, start...PLUS 30, BABY!

  7. Congrats Mark! I'm guessing that you might not want to hear that Matthew beat that game when he was 9. LOL....really though, Im tickled you can put a check next to the box of that childhood dream.
Geesh, you better keep up with the blog. I truly enjoy reading about what goes on in your mind.

  8. When I was 9, I could always get to the last bad guy, just not past him.

I'm sure I'll keep up my blog. I like talking about myself too much not to. It's a vanity thing, I think. :-)
